The Queen’s Baton came to Bristol today, ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games which kick off later this summer.
The Queen’s Baton Relay symbolises the coming together of all Commonwealth nations and territories in much the same way as the Olympic torch binds other sporting nations.
Over a period of 288 days the baton will visit 70 nations and territories, cover 190,000 kilometres and involve a third of the world’s population. Impressed? We are!
Even moreso, however, we were impressed by the events surrounding the baton’s visit.
I didn’t take any pictures because so many of the activities involved children. But there was a hive of activity when I visited the Millennium Square today and witnessed kids participating in tennis, basketball, horse riding, hockey, and even angling! Yes, all in Millennium Square!
Bristol is a great city and it is events like these that really showcase the spirit of the place. The sporting spirit, no less.
