The XX Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014 are just 24 days away. We are excited about the games because it is an opportunity for female sporting heroes to shine, not just for themselves but as role models for the rest of us. And this year, they’ll be shining that much more brightly as the BBC announces its extensive coverage of the games, across multiple streams – with good coverage of the women’s sporting events.
As we prepare to cheer on England, we thought it’d be helpful to look at who we can support more locally. We’ve put together this list of athletes from Bristol and Bath in the hope of providing more insight into some of their stories in the lead up to the events.
Bristol & Bath sportswomen to watch at the Commonwealth Games:
4 x 400m – Emily Diamond from Bristol
4 x 100m – Sophie Papps from Bath
Long Jump – Jazmin Sawyers from Bristol
Claudia Fragapane from Bristol
Ruby Harrold from Churchill, Bristol
Lynne Hutchinson, born in Tokyo and lives in Bath
Lily Owsley forward from Bristol
The final selection for the England Netball team should be announced in the coming days.
In addition to the many women from Bristol and Bath, there are also quite a few who train locally – especially the Judo and Swimming teams.
Representing England in judo are Megan Fletcher and Jan Gosiewski who both train in Bath. In swimming, we have Tilly Gary, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, Sophie Allen, Elizabeth Simmonds, and Amelia Maughan all training in the city.
Other westerners include Jo Pavey from Exeter who will be running both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the games. Jo is a Bristol & West AC life member.
Taunton AC javelin thrower Izzy Jeffs and former Millfield School student Jemma Simpson (1500m) will also be competing in Glasgow.
