In what is undoubtably the best match of the tournament so far, Kerber upset Sharapova’s journey to the final of Wimbledon 2014 to win the 2 hour 43 minute match 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
Sharapova, while not playing her best tennis, fought extremely hard and demonstrated true grit as she fended off six match points before finally losing the seventh on a forehand error. The final game lasted around 10 minutes, the longest of the match, and had the crowd (and myself!) shouting out, gasping, or silently squirming.
Sharapova came back from 5-2 down in the final set to 5-4, rescuing a handful of match points along the way, and showcasing her aggressive play when under pressure. Kerber, on the other hand, chased down most of the balls that came flying her way, relying on quick footwork to upset Sharapova’s game.
If you have time this evening, you should definitely watch Today at Wimbledon at 8pm on BBC2 to see the highlights of the match. Also look out for Kerber playing Bouchard in the quarter-final tomorrow!
