Bristol Academy beat Aston Villa by 2 goals to 1 on Saturday at the Stoke Gifford Stadium.
The Bristol Vixens dominated the first half with tight passes and some impressive shots on goal, utilising Natalia’s sprints to get the ball up the left wing. Unfortunately Villa’s goal keeper was too good for them, holding out long enough for Davies to put pressure on Bristol with a 1-0 lead in the first half. Her impressive 20 yard strike flew past the goal keeper, hitting the bottom left of the net.
Davies’ goal seemed to boost Villa’s confidence in the second half, as they maintained a solid defense, led by their captain, Jade Richards. But it wasn’t enough, as Bristol kept the pressure on displaying professionalism, and scoring in the 59th minute with a fantastic goal from Harding (Vote Harding for Sky Sports Woman of the Month!), hitting the top right of the net.
After the equaliser Bristol picked up the pace and scored the final goal of the match, with a deflection from McCatty. Taking the lead, great passes and some excellent footwork from Evans seemed to deflate Villa’s hopes, as the remainder of the match was safely in Bristol’s hands.
The final score of 2-1 demonstrated Bristol’s high level of play as well as Villa’s brave defense. Player of the match went to Angharad James who exhibited some quick thinking and fantastic skills, setting up several goal opportunities for Bristol.
This was the first time I’ve been to a Bristol Academy game, and I seriously recommend it. With a crowd of 524 cheering fans, quality football, and a fantastic atmosphere, its not to be missed. We’re looking forward to the Vixen’s next home match against Liverpool on the 19th of July, and good luck to them in their away game against Birmingham City next week!
